Do you start an unfinished series?

Hello Reader,

My wife started Game of Thrones years ago. She loved the books and was eagerly awaiting the next one in the series. I may be incorrect but I don’t think there were a ton of books left in the series when George R.R. Martin stopped writing.

My poor wife was hopeful for years that the ending would be published. When the TV series came out she was hoping that the interest from it would spur Martin into some kind of action. And slowly her hope waned and now she is just disappointed.

She has no closure. And the TV show is really not the same.

But what does she do now? Not start a series until it’s complete because she has been burned? Start a series and really hope that doesn’t happen again?

It’s difficult because if everyone took the approach of not starting a series if an author has not finished it yet then authors would never sell books and therefore never finish writing a series.

It means you don’t take chances on new to you authors because as you wait for the books you forget that they exist. And it can mean an overwhelming number of books to read when the series is done.

On the flip side, if you find a reliable author who keeps putting out books then you can trust them to finish what they started. And if you follow along as books get published then you have a chance to reread the first ones in the series and enjoy them all over again.

So what do you do, wait or read on?
