Hello Reader,
I have been pondering masculine-presenting sapphic characters recently and wondering if we are seeing fewer of them in sapphic fiction than we used to. And are going to see rep that is different to the stoic silent type who opens doors for others and builds things with their hands?
I love that we have butch women, studs and other masc presenting sapphic individuals in our mix and I am glad that we get some of that represented in our literature. But often our fiction reduces them to stereotypes, or as just another femme but this one is wearing sensible shoes.
In real life they are as diverse and complex as any other sapphic character and I would love to see those difference and personality traits explored a little more.
Representation matter and masc characters deserve to be included in a range of roles, with distinct personalities and clearly masc presenting traits. They can and should be heroes, love interests or even villains. They can be romantic interests and even find other masc characters attractive.
Let’s give our masc people a little bit of love.
Perhaps I am just looking in the wrong places, if so, give me some recs for great masc representation in sapphic fiction that is not just a cardboard character.
