This week I am feeling the book vibes. This year has seen some truly remarkable books being published and that makes me a happy human.
That got me thinking - Are you a curator or do you do vibes?
There are readers who carefully curate their reading experience so that one type of experience follows another and then there are those who go with the vibes of what they feel like reading in that moment.
Curators often have these traits
- Never read similar books back to back.
- Don’t read the same author back to back.
- Include a good mix of genres or tropes.
- Rotate through shorter and longer books.
- Spread out books that are more likely be quality reads and intersperse with new to them authors.
- Mix lighter and heavier reads.
That’s not to say there isn’t room for flexibility in the curator’s reads. The list is just more purposeful.
Whereas folks who read purely by vibes often just go with what sounds awesome in that moment and will seek a super specific book that they have a yearning for. These are the people who post things like - anyone know of a sapphic book that’s like batman?
For me, it’s changed over the years. I used to be quite purposeful about what I read because it cost a lot to ship paperbacks to South Africa and there were no ebooks and no real sapphic books that I could buy in store.
Then as the prevalence of ebooks popped into the world, my list became less curated and more curious.
Now, with time being a weird soup and feeling like I am oddly stretched for it, I only pick up books I really want to read.
So, which are you? Do you curate your to read list? Do you just pick anything that catches your attention? Or are you a little of both?

I am also happy that we are getting more car racing sapphic romances. Not that I am a huge sports fan, but I think it’s a cool setting for a book and why not jump on the excitement of formula one? Melissa Brayden has a new one and so does Leigh Hays.
